Area Cattle Producers Coping with Drought June 22 Meeting Planned

June 12, 2023

Dry conditions have area cattle producers seeking alternatives and the Monroe-Shelby County Cattlemen's Association has engaged some local resources to address concerns at a meeting to be held on Thursday evening, June 22[nd] at 7 p.m. at the farm of David and Tyler Wilt. The Wilt's farm is located at 26499 Route CC, a short 9 miles southeast of Shelbina. Producers are encouraged to bring a lawn chair. Refreshments will be served.

According to Tony Francis, President of the local MO Cattlemen's affiliate, this gathering will be an informational sharing session with the intent of providing producers with some ideas and potential solutions to deal with the implications of the past few months of dry weather in lieu of liquidating cow herds. "Everyone is invited to attend," said Francis.

Topics of discussion will focus on managing cow herds on low quality and low quantities of pasture and hay by looking at options for creep-feeding calves, early weaning, or supplementing cows. Additionally, presenters will also look at what opportunities there might be going into late summer and fall should the weather prove more favorable precipitation-wise throughout the remainder of the summer months. Health and productivity issues will also be addressed as producers try to mitigate drought concerns.
