“Sideways Stories From Wayside School” a big hit

Madison Play Cast

The Madison High School players performed “Sideways Stories From Wayside School” on Friday, May 9, in the high school gymnasium to raucous applause.
“You are in for a treat,” said Director Chris Lynn to the audience. “The cast has worked hard for a couple of months.”
The play consisted of five scenes and the play takes place in the thirtieth floor classroom of the Wayside School. Up there everything is sideways, exaggerated and very colorful.
The set creators did an excellent job of turning the gymnasium floor into a perfect rendition of what they saw as the colorful thirtieth floor classroom.
The play became an interactive evening for the young as children in the audience were invited to sit right up front and participated in the play as extras. The cast members included the children in their dance routines to the delight of the youth.
Director Lynn showed his experience in cast placement as the individual actors seemed perfect for their respective roles. A comment heard in the crowd noted that Karla Salmons (Ms. Gorf) played such an excellent witch she could be cast in Wicked, a current Broadway production about the Land of Oz through the eyes of the witches.
Anyone who attended the production will never forget the whining and pigtail pulling antics of Myron (Herzog Whatley), of the apple eating, to the horror of the students who knew it was Ms. Gorf, of Louis (Wiley Whatley), or the special math skills of Danny (Shelbi Danner). The crowd laughed and cheered the cast members throughout the entire production.
Scenes included: Ms. Gorf Loves Apples (where she ends up turning herself into an apple); Ms. Jewels (Taylor Salmons) – The New Teacher; Counting Problems; Stinky Sammy; and Wayside School Is Falling Down.
Cast members included: BeBe, Stacy Harlow; Myron, Herzog Whatley; Ms. Gorf, Karla Salmons; Danny, Shelbi Danner; Leslie, Haley Cline; Rondi, Chris Lynn; Ms. Jewels, Taylor Salmons; Louis, Wiley Whatley; Pigtail #1, Staci Harlow; Pigtail #2, Shelbi Danner; Sammy, Mariah Silkwood; Mr. Pickell, Wiley Whatley. No play is successful without a large amount of behind the scenes work from crew members and this is no exception for this play. Backstage crew members included: Sound, Christina Riley and Brittney Barton; lighting, Mariah Silkwood and of course Director Chris Lynn.
There was no cost to watch the performance but attendees could make donations.
The performance was a huge success as witnessed by the raucous applause and numerous favorable and superlative comments heard after the rousing finale.
